Uh-Oh!! Maybe I should not say it. Maybe it’s going to put me in trouble. Or you might think I’m getting a little bit sick in the head. Well, I’m courageous, so let’s take deep breath and jump: I saw bubbles houses on top of a mountain in Côte d’Azur! Yep, no joke. I’m serious !
The picture above seems to be taken out of a Stanley Kubrick’s movie or part of a strange research complex on Mars. But for those who have never been there, it’s just a few kilometers from Gourdon in Côte d’Azur. It’s part of an infrastructure setup on Plateau de Calern where passionates of astronomy can go on with their activities. You can believe me, I was there yesterday.
I had been in Gourdon for short visit (I love this place) earlier in the day and decided to push a little farther on Plateau de Caussols. I thought I would see my friend “Donkey” (refer to a previous post), but the gate was opened and he was not there. I kept driving and noticed a big white ball on top of a mountain on the left. Took a road to get there but after a few kilometers it only got me to a big closed gate : Aviation Civile de France. Probably a major radar installation for the Nice Airport and others. So I had to turn back and get back to the main road where I saw a white observatory dome on the opposite mountain chain. I decided to try and get there. This time I had more success as it is a site accessible to the public, or at least for the most part. When I reach the parking lot at the top on the mountain I already knew I had a great time there.
First, it was very refreshing at a couple degrees less then at sea level. Second, the building I had in front of me were very interesting (shape, colors, etc.) and spread on a large area. I like to walk around and discover things. I can even see some sort of bunker on the right. Finally, there was a lot to discover and learn. I was not even off the scooter that I knew THIS was my final destination for the day. Let’s get busy!
So I walk from one building to the other, taking pictures of all of them from different angles. I really had a great time and felt I was completely enjoying the place and the act of photography. You know it when you look in the view finder. Can’t explain. But you know you’re in for a lot of fun and satisfaction.
Just before I left I saw a guy with a small (2m wide) remote-controlled airplane near a cliff. I walked in his direction and engaged the conversation. Great guy and very passionate about his “toy”. He offered to make the airplane fly so I can see it. How nice from him. So I stayed there for about an hour and really enjoy looking at it. I learned a couple things on the subject, which is great. Learn. Learn. Learn. Love it.
When I got home and transferred the pictures to the computer, it seemed obvious to me that they would look great in black and white. There’s is a bunch of them and you can find the whole picture set on my website at www.normandprimeau.com. While you’re there, let me know what you think.
