Nice Carnival 2014: beware of the dragon

The City of Nice on Côte d’Azur is launching today its 130th Carnival. That’s pretty impressive and one of the most important Carnival on the planet. This event will bring in a lot of visitors. If you are a photographer you will certainly want to attend and try to get the most of this event that lasts until March 4th.

A Sleeping Giant

Beware of the Dragon, a strange beast lurking in the area. The last time I saw it is on Sunday when I visited Nice to make some photography. I knew you would not believe me so I have a picture of it for you today. It was taken near Parc Albert 1er. The dragon seemed exhausted, probably resting before getting in the show. But don’t get fooled by its quiet attitude, the beast is huge and I suspect some incredible power beneath its rough skin. Hopefully we should find out pretty soon I believe.

A Bit Of Advice

  • Go light: the place is jam packed with people everywhere. It’s a huge crowd. Avoid leaving home with tripods and a big bag full of photo equipment. That won’t help you in any way. Also, while there is security everywhere, just don’t risk anything. Instead, focus on taking picture, not watching your bag all the time. In the stands you will only piss off everybody with your big lens and tripod. Try to grab the show as a whole. Anyways, the cars are so big you won’t miss anything
  • Get involved: the best experience I had in 2011 is when I went ahead of the cars in the middle of the streets and turned back to shoot them as they were coming towards me. You’ll have to move all the time, but the benefits are plenty.
  • Get there at night: Of course you can attend the carnival at anytime (check the schedule), but I find the show is incredible at night. All the spots, the dark sky and the colors are awesome. Call it my personal opinion, but just like a show in the theater, it really happens when they turn off the lights!

If you’d like to see some photos of the 2011 edition, I wrote something two years ago after attending the carnival. It’s a short text and only a few photos, but it gives an idea of how it really is. Enjoy!

Good Light!
